Construction of gas pipelines in Poland:
The prospect of 2018 – connected with the preparation and implementation of the most important investment tasks of the so-called North-South Corridor aimed at ensuring conditions for the construction of a regionally integrated gas market in the Central and Eastern European countries
The prospect of 2023 – completion of the national transmission system’s modernization in the eastern part of Poland and ensuring conditions for integration of the Baltic countries’ gas market with the Central and Eastern European countries’ market.
PRESENT NATIONAL TRANSMISSION SYSTEM
The transmission system is composed of two natural gas subsystems:
▪ methane-rich E;
▪ high nitrogen Lw.
The transmission system managed by GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. is supplied with gas from the following Entry Points:
The system of methane-rich natural gas forms the main system comprising:
Figure 2 Main E gas transmission lines:
Figure 3 High nitrogen gas system
The transmission system of high-nitrogen natural gas covers parts of western Poland on the area of the following provinces: Lubuskie, Greater Poland and Lower Silesia.
It is supplied with gas from deposits located in the Polish Lowland by the following gas mines:
- Kościan-Brońsko,
- Bonikowo,
- Białcz,
- Radlin,
- Zaniemyśl (Mchy) and Roszków.
Due to great differences in gas composition in respective gas mines, high-nitrogen gas composition is stabilized by adding methane-rich gas in gas mixing plants of Krobia and Grodzisk.
The methane-rich gas transmission system cooperates with underground gas storages that fulfil an extremely important role of a regulator covering inequality of demand for gas.
Storage System Operator is responsible for the safe operation and use of the methane-rich gas underground storage. The Storage System Operator has, among others, the following storages at its disposal:

▪ PMG Strachocina (deposit depleted);
▪ PMG Husów(deposit depleted);
▪ PMG Swarzów(deposit depleted);
▪ PMG Brzeźnica(deposit depleted);
▪ KPMG Mogilno (salt caverns);
▪ KPMG Kosakowo (salt caverns).
The transmission system operated by GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. includes a network of high pressure gas with the following items:
▪ gas pipelines with shut off and relief valve systems, connection systems, compressor station connection systems and nodes used for gas distribution;
▪ gas compressor stations;
▪ gas distribution nodes;
▪ gas stations with devices installed which are used to reduce, adjust and measure gaseous fuel.

INVESTMENTS
Over the years 2009-2015 GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. implemented an investment plan consisting in construction of over 1200 km of new transmission pipelines.The most important ones have been constructed in north-western and central Poland.
The investments implemented by GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. as well as the service of virtual reverse flow on the Yamal pipeline have resulted in significant improvement of Poland’s energy security by increasing the technical capacity to import gas from directions other than the East up to 90% of the imports implemented (until 2011 it was 9%).
GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. takes an active part in creation of an integrated network of gas pipelines in Central Europe and affects formation of the European gas sector.
Our proposals concerning development of the transmission infrastructure in Poland fit into the EU plans to create new connections increasing energy security and allowing to diversify natural gas supplies from new sources.
Over the years 2015-2025 GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. is going to construct more than 2000 km of gas pipelines in western, southern and eastern parts of Poland. Further expansion of the national transmission network, including construction of new gas pipelines within the the North-South Gas Corridor, as well as construction of inter-system connections with Lithuania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic will be an important contribution into development of the European transmission system.
Next infrastructural investments of GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. in the national transmission system will be implemented in western, southern and eastern parts of Poland.
2014-2023 Investment Program
The next stage of the Polish transmission system development will be construction of new gas pipelines within the North-South Gas Corridor, supported by the European Union, which will allow for full integration of the transmission infrastructure in this part of Europe.
For this purpose over the years 2014-2023 GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. intends to construct a total of approx. 2000 km of new gas pipelines in western, southern and eastern parts of Poland.
This prospect also provides for construction of new gas connections with the EU member states (e.g. Poland - Czech Republic, Poland - Slovakia, Poland - Lithuania).
They are, among others, the following high-pressure gas pipelines:
- Lwówek-Odolanów
- Czeszów-Kiełczów
- Czeszów-Wierzchowice
- Zdzieszowice-Wrocław
- Hermanowice-Strachocina
- Strachocina -Pogórska Wola
- Pogórska Wola-Tworzeń
- Tworzeń-Tworóg
- Tworóg-Kędzierzyn Koźle
- Rembelszczyzna-Mory-Wola Karczewska.
Figure 5 The course of the North-South Corridor.
Further expansion of the national transmission network, including construction of new gas pipelines within the the North-South Gas Corridor, as well as construction of inter-system connections with Lithuania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic will be an important contribution to development of the European transmission system. GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. investments are financed by the European Union.
Investments planned for 2016 – 2023
Figure 6. Investments continued and planned until 2023.
After completion, in 2014, of the implemented investments, it will be necessary to continue construction of the North-South Corridor’s next sections. Implementation of the investment program in the horizon of 2018 will make it possible to transfer large amounts of gas from the LNG Terminal to the south and east of Poland and to distribute the gas imported from the Czech Republic and Slovakia within the transmission system.
What is more, an investment is envisaged which will increase the system throughput in the area of the Łodż and Warsaw agglomerations as well as Lower Silesia.
Further expansion of the gas pipeline system must be supported by the construction of new or expansion of the existing gas compressor stations.
It is expected that new compressor stations will be built at Jeleniowo and Odolnów whereas the compressor station at Rembelszczyzna will be expanded.
After 2018 modernization tasks will be implemented on the main line: Rembelszczyzna – Wronów- Rozwadów – Jarosław – Hermanowice (eastern section of the North- South Corridor) and the western part of the North- South Corridor will be continued, as these investments result from both the market needs and the projected technical condition.
Construction of these pipelines will also make it possible to close down the south -eastern ring of the main transmission lines and will improve conditions of the effective conduct of gas traffic within the network.
